Internet Violations and Abuse
As a service to our
customers, Global Internet Services, Inc. informs you of
security issues that may pose a problem. As you've discovered, using the
Internet can be a very rewarding experience. While the public nature of the
'Net connects us to worthwhile information and a global community, it also
opens the door to some negative activity. Fortunately, you can protect
yourself from much of this activity if you take the proper precautions. The
first step is being aware of potential harm.
SPAM mail is one of the most prevalent forms of abuse on the Internet today. Sending
unsolicited email to multiple recipients takes up bandwidth and wastes space on users
computers. Although there is not much we can do to stop SPAM, we can guard against it
and do the best to configure our networks against allowing SPAM to pass through our servers.
As part of this program we no longer allow hosted sites to use the installed mail server to send email
through to the Internet without authentication. SMTP or outgoing mail can only be sent once the user
has logged into their POP3 mail account and becomes authenticated. This authentication lasts for 15
minutes, during which time the user is enabled to send mail. We've chose this option due to the risk
of outside users abusing our network to send SPAM email.
